Havanur Fort

Havanur Fort is a fort located on the banks of the Tungabhadra river in a village area of Haveri taluk in Haveri district of Karnataka state. Havanur Fort is a fort built in the 10th century by the rulers of the Ganga dynasty. The fort suffered much damage when it was occupied by the Bahmani army and later by the Bijapur Sultans.

Havanur Fort is about 374 km from Bangalore and 40 km from Hubli. And it is 18 km away from Haveri city. 20 km from Haveri city Railway Station.

The history of the fort can be understood from the remains of a fine external wall in a cold state. Three bastions surrounded by jalikadi can be seen in this area. Western Chalukya architecture is a vestige of Indian architectural tradition with references to the history of the place.

Adishakti temple at Havanur village is very famous in Haveri district and Tungabhadra river flows in the village. Adishakti Jatra is held once every year which is the most popular and well-attended fair in Haveri district. The place is called the snake town or Havanur because of the ‘purana’ of many snakes found in this place. Also known as Havanada Ooroo (Sanskrit havana, place of sacrifice) Havanoor is famous for the Daimavva Devi Adishakti temple.

Devi is a goddess of immense transcendental powers. Her idol is placed on an open plinth only one day a year. It is a fact that about 150 years ago, the idol of the goddess came to this place in a box along with a golden thread saree. Here there is a tradition that if people try to capture a photograph of the goddess, it will not appear in the film.

Havanur also has Marthanda Bhairava Temple, fondly called ‘Seven Koti’. Marthanda Bhairava is worshiped by various castes including Muslims. It is special here that after an eight-day fast at a fair held in January, a monk, a male deity wrapped in sheep wool blankets with a bow and a wooden pillar, looks around the area and prophesies. He utters a prediction of a year’s crop and rainfall pattern and falls down. This atmosphere of peace is worthy and mysterious to watch the prophecy.
