Nanneshwar Temple is an 11th century Hindu temple in Lakkundi, Gadag district, Karnataka state. It is a very ancient imperial style temple of the Kalyana Chalukyas, with significant influence from the periods of the North Indian and South Indian kings of Hindu architecture. Nanneshwar temple is close to Kashivishweshwar temple.
Nanneshwar temple is 403 km from Bangalore, 70 km from Hubballinagar and just 11 km from Gadag city by road. The distance to this temple is 13 km by railway.
Nanneshwar Temple is open from 08.00 AM to 08.00 PM.
The Nanneshwar temple has a large, open-pillared Ranga-mantapa, a covered Madhya-mantapa, and a garbhagriha. The plan is similar to the slightly earlier Brahma Jinalaya Jain temple at Lakkundi and the earlier Shiva temple at Kukkanur, but the Nanneshwar temple shows a series of innovations with a slightly grander and distinctive style than these older versions. Moreover the relative proportions of the ground plan make the architect’s ideas beautiful and suggest the Nagara style particularly from its central and western parts. Yet the sculptors have uniquely and wonderfully executed various pillar styles and decorative elements in soapstone in the Nanneshwar temple.
Gudhamandapa is a square plan like Rangamantapa. It has steps for entry, beautifully sized and carved porticoes. The inner Gurdhamandapa has four pillars, more elaborately carved and polished than those in the Rangamandapa. The Gurhamandapa walls are similar in style to those found in Vimana. The sanctum sanctorum is square in shape and houses a Shivalinga.
