Sir M. Vishweshwarayya Memorial

Muddenahalli, the birthplace of Sir M Visvesvaraya, is located in the Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka state. Muddenahalli is a memorial to Sir M Visvesvaraya, located on family owned land, the house where he was born has been converted into a museum with the backdrop of the Nandi Hills. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was India’s first engineer. His birthday, September 15, is celebrated as Engineer’s Day every year in India.

Sir M. Visvesvaraya Memorial is about 59 km from Bangalore. It is about 07 km from Chikkaballapur city and 08 km from Chikkaballapur railway station.

Visvesvaraya was born on 15 September 1860 at Muddenahalli in Chikkaballapur district. Visvesvaraya’s father was Srinivasa Shastri and mother was Venkatalakshmamma. Mokshagundam is associated with his name as his ancestors migrated from Mokshagundam in present day Andhra Pradesh and settled in Muddenahalli.

Visvesvaraya completed his primary education in Chikkaballapur and his secondary education in Bangalore. He graduated from Madras University in 1881 with a BA degree and later graduated from the Science College, Pune with a degree in Civil Engineering.

Visvesvaraya was appointed as Diwan of Mysore. He was the Chief Engineer responsible for the construction of the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam in Mysore. During his reign, Mysore underwent major transformation in the fields of agriculture, irrigation, industrialization, education, banking and commerce.
