Kalakaleshwar temple is located near Gajendragad city in Gadag district of Karnataka state. This temple is situated on a hill about 300 feet high. Kalakaleshwar Temple is an ancient temple which is also known as Dakshina Kashi.
It houses the Kalakaleshwar or Dakshina Kashi temple of Lord Shiva worshiped in the form of Kalakaleshwar. It is a traditional temple with Udbhava Linga.
Kalakaleshwar temple is 415 km from Bangalore, 117 km from Hubli city, 59 km from Gadag city and only 06 km from Gajendragad city.
Lord Shiva is worshiped in the form of Kalakaleshwar in this temple. Tourists can conveniently reach this ancient temple directly with the help of a huge staircase of around 200 steps. The only way to climb the hill is on foot.
History
If Lord Vishweshwar came here from Kashi Kshetra to kill Gajasura asuras, after killing Gajasura, he settled here as Udbhava Linga as desired by the devotees. This lingam is known as Kalakaleshwar. The monolithic rock hill where this god resides is called Kalakappa hill.
