The temple has a sanctum sanctorum, antarala, arthamantapa and mukha mantap. The original idol is Sri Varadaraja Swami in a standing posture. Archavas and Alvars are in Arthamantapa. Altar and Dvajastamba are in Mookha Mandapam. The idol of the Goddess is on the right side of Mula Sri Varadaraja Swamy. The idols of Vinayaka, Garuda and Anjaneya are located near the Mookamantapa.
This place Terakanambi was ruled by Kadamba, Chola, Hoysala, Vijayanagara and Mysore kings. There is evidence that the King of Mysore Sri Ranadhira Kantheerava (1638 to 1713 AD) came and spent his childhood days in this village. During his reign he extended his territory up to Madurai. It expanded further during the Vijayanagara period.
