Panchamukhi Hanuman, Lakshmi-Venkateswara and Kurma were seen by Sri Raghavendra Swami who came here in the 17th century. There Pujya Raghavendra Swami did penance for 12 years. By then the place was overgrown with trees and was a veritable forest in itself.
A few centuries ago there lived a devout Madhva Brahmin named Anantachar. One night, Panchamukhi Hanuman appeared to him in a dream and instructed him to worship his Swayambhu idol in the forest. He installed the idol and started regular worship to it. His descendants, even today, act as high priests to Lord Panchmukhi Hanuman.
