Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens / Mysore Zoo

Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, popularly known as Mysore Zoo, is one of the oldest zoos in the country. Mysore Zoo is known for its meticulous planning, cleanliness, conservation of endangered species, housing exotic animals from around the world and natural habitat for captive animals.

The zoo is about 141 km from Bangalore and 120 km from Madikeri and just 02 km from Mysore.

Zoo Timings

Mysore Zoo is open from daily 08:30 AM to 5:30 PM except every Tuesday as a holiday.

The zoo is located in the heart of Mysore city and has made it a tourist hub. It was started by Sri Chamarajendra Wodeyar Bahadur, the 23rd ruler of the Yaduvamsa dynasty of Mysore in 1892 during his reign. Mysore Zoo has a favorable climate, with temperatures reaching a maximum of 35 degrees in summer and less than 20 degrees in winter.

The zoo was not designed to entertain the royals but to educate the people of the state about wildlife. The zoo exhibits the unique distinction of breeding rare species of animals and birds and emphasizes towards animal comfort and well-being.

Initially starting with an area of 10.9 acres and then in 1907 an additional 6.22 acres was added and subsequently expanded to 45 acres and now the total area is 157.02 acres including 77.02 acres of the Karanji Kere.

This zoo is prepared on modern lines. There are big trees, bushes and lush grass for the animals to roam around and enjoy. For the first time in Indian history, all these species of animals and birds can be seen together. They have more than 1450 specimens comprising 150 species.
