Crops were destroyed due to lack of water. Construction began in November 1911 under the leadership of the then King Krishna Raja Wodeyar IV Maharaja of Mysore and employed 10,000 workers, and when construction was completed in 1931, around 5,000 to 10,000 people lost their homes to the project. They were resettled in adjoining areas and provided agricultural land by the government.

It is the main source of water for Mysore districts. The KRS Dam water is used for irrigation in Mysore and Mandya and is the main source of drinking water for Mysore, Mandya and most of Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka. The water released from this dam flows into the state of Tamil Nadu and is stored in the Mettur dam in Salem district.
