Hulikere Totti or Hulikere Bavi or Pushkarini or Hulikere Step Well is constructed like an underground well, with stone steps from lower to mid height on four sides. Above that level are 12 sanctuaries called shikharas (peaks). Between them are 14 sanctuaries with or without peaks. There are steps leading down to another possible sanctum site. The 9-tiered tower is about 50 meters high. It served as a bath for queens in the first half of the 12th century. “Huli means tiger and Kere means pond,” Locals say this is the private pond of Rani Shantala Devi, whose security was so tight that even a tiger could not enter to see her – hence the name Hulikere.
