Dodda Aalada Mara (Big Banyan Tree) is a giant 400 year old giant banyan tree located in Ketohalli/Ramohalli, Bangalore, Karnataka, a famous tourist spot. The main trunk of the tree dies of natural causes around the late 2000s, after the old roots are shed the buttress roots grow above ground, supported by thousands of aerial buttress roots that emerge from the tree. So these roots give the impression that they are the roots of a tree. A large banyan tree has been designated as a heritage tree.
The tree has a circumference of 820 feet, and has 1,359 buttress roots, of which 811 touch the ground and 548 hang 10-15 feet above the ground. Each root grows from 7 inches to 3 feet in circumference.
