Shri Ghati Subrahmanya Temple

Ghati Subramanya is a Hindu temple located in Ghati village near Tubagere in Bangalore Rural district of Karnataka state. Local transport is available from Doddaballapur to Ghati Subramanya and is a popular pilgrimage center for Subramanya. The specialty of this temple is that the presiding deity Kartikeya is seen along with Lord Narasimha.

This temple is 58 km from Bangalore city and 15 km from Doddaballapur taluk.

Ghati Subrahmanya temple timings are generally 6 am to 8.30 pm.

The idol of Kartikeya with seven headed cobra is made of single stone. There is a carving of Narasimha on the back of the stone. It faces east while the idol of Lord Narasimha faces west. To make both deities visible to the devotees simultaneously, a huge mirror was placed at the back of the sanctum sanctorum.

Adi (First) Subrahmanya is in Kukke Subrahmanya Temple, Madhya (Middle) Subrahmanya God is in Ghati Subrahmanya Temple and Anthya (Last) Subrahmanya is in Nagulamadaka Subrahmanya Swamy Temple.

Ghati Subrahmanya has a history of more than 600 years. According to Puranas, both idols are believed to have emerged from the earth. It is an important center in South India for the worship of the Hindu deity Ketu. Special rituals are performed on Brahmarathotsava on Pushya Shuddha Shasthi. Narasimha Jayanti is another important festival celebrated here. Marriage programs are also held in this temple. There is also a free meal arrangement for the devotees visiting the temple.

Garbharakshamigai Goddess Shakti Temple is the main attraction. Devotees believe that childless couples are blessed with children by the Lord by performing vratas (harake). A related ritual is the installation of idols of snakes (cobra snake). Thousands of such idols can be seen in the temple premises.

People prefer to visit Ghati Subrahmanya Temple on Tuesdays, as Tuesdays are considered auspicious. Avoid weekends if you are planning to perform special pooja.

According to the Sthala Purana or the legend associated with the temple, Ghati is the place where Subrahmanya, disguised as a serpent, performed penance before setting out to kill Vajranga and Tarakasura, Vajrangi’s son. Lord Subrahmanya is in the form of a seven-headed serpent and is believed to be the area where the demon Ghatikasura was slain. Kumaraswamy (Subrahmanyaswamy) slayed demons like Taraka, Shura and Padmasura Ghati Subrahmanya Temple is an important place of snake worship in South India.
