Karnataka has many temples of Lord Narasimha compared to other states and in all those temples there is a temple called Lord Yoga Narasimha or Lakshmi Narasimha or Ugra Narasimha. A few meters away from the Vaidyanath Swamy Temple in Maddur is one such temple dedicated to Sri Ugra Narasimha, which is spiritually significant and historically significant with footprints of the Mahabharata war.

The history of this temple is that in this region Arjuna loses his inner strength to fight against his own family members. Arjuna, who was mentally exhausted during the first stages of the war, requested Lord Krishna to show him the form of Narasimha Avatara. At the request of Lord Krishna in the form of God, Brahma carved the Lord in the form of Sri Ugranarasimha and gave darshan to Arjuna in order to have his mental peace and continue the war. Later the deity was installed in Maddur. This ferocious Lord Narasimha is one of the fiercest forms of Narasimha worshiped in this form. This place was earlier called Arjunapuri as this temple was built as per the wish of Arjuna.

Lord Narasimha has eight arms and three eyes. It is a scene where Hiranyakashipu’s chest is split open with two hands while lying on Lord Narasimha’s feet. The two hands hold Hiranyakashipu’s intestines, which appear as a garland on the transcendental body of the Lord. The other four hands hold the Lord’s weapons namely Sudarshan Chakra, Panchajanya, Pasha and Ankusa. On the right side of the Lord is Prahlada and on the left side is the idol of Lord Garuda humbly standing and praying to the Lord.

A very rare idol of Yashodheya, Bhudevi and Sridevi, the concert idol of Lord Narasimha who feeds Lord Krishna. The idols of Sri Rama, Sita Devi and Lakshmana as well as Hanuman are unique.

It was named Kadambavanam because Sage Kadama worshiped Sri Ugranarasimha. The temple was renovated during the Hoysala rule. Later in the 16th and 17th century, ammunition was manufactured and stored here and the place became Maddur.

Lord Varadaraja Swamy is a 12 feet tall idol located in a small shrine at the back of Ugra Narasimha Temple. Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana was a disciple of Saint Ramanujacharya. Once Vishnuvardhana’s mother partially lost her sight. Saint Ramanujaracharya advised Vishnuvardhana’s mother to visit the Varadaraja Swamy temple in Kanchipuram and pray for 48 days to regain her sight.

At the behest of Saint Ramanujacharya, Vishnuvardhana brought sculptors from Kanchipuram and built a replica of the Varadarajaswamy temple in Maddur. His mother prayed continuously to Lord Varadaraja in Maddur for 48 days and regained her lost sight.

Adjacent to the Varadaraja Deva Temple is the Pattabhirama Temple of Maddur. There is also a big banyan tree on the path connecting the three temples.
