Shri Bhagandeshwara Temple Coorg

It is a common practice for pilgrims to the Bhagandeshwar Temple to bathe in the Triveni Sangam and perform rituals for their ancestors before proceeding to Talakaveri, the birthplace of Kaveri. A temple of Lord Shiva in the name of Bhagandeshwar adorns the place. It is a local belief that Kaveri, worshiped as Dakshina Ganga, emerges from Lord Shiva’s braided hair at this place. Pilgrims throng here in large numbers during the transit of Libra, which falls on October 17 or 18.

A short distance from Triveni Sangam is a famous temple known as Sri Bhagandeshwar Temple, where idols of Bhagandeshwar (Ishvara), Subrahmanya and Ganapati are installed. This place got the name of Bhagandeshwar Temple Kshetra and Bhagamandal. The area has an elevation of 898 m (2,946 ft). The temple in this area is built in west coast style.

During 1785-1790, this region was occupied by Tipu Sultan. The temple was burnt and destroyed. He also renamed Bhagamandal as Afzalabad. Later in 1790, King Dodda Vira Rajendra took Bhagamandal back to the independent Kodagu state.
