Raja’s Tomb

A garden with flowers and fountains is the Raja’s seat. Also known as the Tomb of the Kings, Gaddig is the seat of the Rajas. This monument contains remains of the Kodavar dynasty. It is believed to be the place where the kings of Kodagu spent their evenings enjoying the panoramic views. It is approximately 160 feet above sea level.

Raja’s Tomb is about 256 km from Bangalore. It is 119 km from Mysorenagar and just 2 km from Madikeri and about 160 km from Mangalore.

Doddaveerarajendra and his wife Mahadeviamma rested in their largest samadhi. It was completed by his brother Lingarajendra. The dome on the right, dedicated to Lingarajendra and his wife, was built in 1820 by his son Chikkavirarajendra, who became the last ruler of Coorg. This monument is built with tombs in the center and towers at the corners. The corners are carved with figures of Nandi, as Hindus worshiped Shiva inside the tomb. Close to the mausoleums is the burial place of Biddanda Bopu and his son Biddanda Somayya, two valiant royal officers who sacrificed their lives fighting Tipu Sultan.

Its entrance is open from Thursday to Sunday from 9:30 AM – 7:00 PM. The Halleri dynasty was founded by Veerarajendra the great from the 17th century and Mudduraja replaced Keri as Bidanur as the capital. It is called madikeri. The most famous king of Halleri dynasty was Doddaveerappa. The Halleri dynasty ruled Koda in the 17th century from 1600 to 1834.

Raja’s seat has a cool location that overlooks a valley bathed in green and the horizon in all shades of blue and orange. In between, Madikeri was part of the Mysore kings for eight years. The ruler of Mysore and father of Tipu Sultan fought a war against Coorg for 3 months and eight days from Hyder Ali. The Coorg fort surrendered in 1765 and the king fled back to the Malabar region. In 1788, through British intervention, the Coorg kings regained their kingdom. He signed a treaty bringing Coorg under British protection.
