Kote Betta

Kote Betta Trek is a popular tourist spot in Kodagu. Kotebetta at Madapur, between Somwarpet and Madikeri towns, is about 1620 m (550 ft) above sea level. Located 35 km from Madikeri and 22 km from Somwarpet, Kotebetta is the third highest peak in the Kodagu region after Tadiandamol and Brahmagiri.

Kote Betta means Fort Hill. It is named because of its appearance resembling a fort. This place has significance in Hindu mythology. At the top of the hill (Shikhara) stands an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, with a spectacular view of the towering peaks and verdant landscapes.

It is about 271 km from Bangalore. It is 130 km from Mysore and 160 km from Mangalore.

On the border between Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu districts, the Kotebetta trek is easily accessible. Located 10 km from Hattihole, this peak is an ideal place for trekking. Once reaching the peak, the view of the surrounding area is breathtaking. The trek starts from Hattihole and ends at the peak. Coffee estates en route will make your trek more enjoyable.

Locals here often tell stories about the Pandavas from the Mahabharata and believe that the brothers made the place their home for a while while in hiding – they even built some stone houses, the ruins of which are still scattered across Coorg.
