Ayyana Kere

Ayyana Kere is a lake near Sakharayapatnam village in Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka. It is the largest lake in Chikmagalur district and the second largest lake in Karnataka.

The lake is about 255 km from Bangalore, 30 km from Chikkamagalur and 23 km from Kadura town and Kadura Railway Station (DRU) is the nearest railway station at a distance of 23 km.

Ayyanakere Lake is an ancient lake located at the foothills of the Baba Budan Range. From this, the water of this lake has been used for agricultural activities in several villages up to a distance of 15 kilometers. Extensive lake water was constructed to supply agriculture. It supplies water for irrigation of 22 thousand hectares of land in the region.

It has a vast land area flowing between small mountains. The cool breeze blowing over the lake gives a soothing experience to nature lovers. Ayyanakere is also known as Big Magoda lake and Ayyanakere lake is surrounded by beautiful mountain hills on three sides.

This lake is believed to have been built by Rukmanga Raya, ruler of Sakharayapatnam. It was renovated in 1156 AD during the Hoysala dynasty. For history enthusiasts, Ayyanakere Lake offers a fascinating journey into the past. Remnants of their architectural prowess can be seen from ancient temples and structures near the lake. There are 10 canals to distribute water in the lake.
