Narasimha Jhira Cave Temple

NarasimhaJhira Cave Temple is dedicated to the lion god Narasimha, an incarnation of Vishnu. This temple is also known as Jarani Narasimha Temple. The idol in the Narasimha Jhira cave temple is believed to be very powerful as it is in the form of Swayambhu idol, so many people flock to this temple. The Narasimha Jharani Cave Temple is known for its natural beauty and is considered very sacred.

The temple is about 05 km from Bidar railway station and 07 km from Mangalapet, Pakalwada on the outskirts of Bidar town. This ancient temple is open from 07 AM to 6 PM.

This ancient temple was excavated in a 300m tunnel under the Manichula hill range. Devotees have to pass through a cave that contains a constant stream of water. Inside the cave, a stream of water flows continuously from the foundation of the temple. Devotees have to walk waist deep in 300 meters of water to have a darshan of Lord Narasimha. As there is very little space, only eight people are allowed in the sanctum sanctorum at a time. About eight people can stand and watch this amazing sight.

According to the Puranas, Narasimha first killed Hiranyakashipu and then proceeded to kill the demon Jalasura who was a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva. After being killed by Lord Narasimha, the demon Jalasura turned into water and started flowing as water under Narasimha’s feet.

The end of the cave temple is a sanctum sanctorum with two deities Narasimha and Shivalinga at the end, worshiped by the demon Jalasura.

Bats can be seen hanging from the ceiling of the cave and flying along the tunnel. But surprisingly no one has been harmed by the bats so far. People walk around chanting the words Govinda-Govinda and Narasimha Hari-Hari with devotion as mantras. Others have to wait their turn in the water. Because water is constantly flowing and people walk in it, the water does not remain crystal clear.

The water contains sulfur and is said to have healing properties for people with skin problems. Overall the temple experience is thrilling and adventurous. Narasimha Jharani is a tubular spring. Although Bidar is high, the temple is low. The rock formation under the plateau is about 35.4 km long and 19.3 km wide. The plateau consists of a crust of red rock, lying at the base of a trap with depths ranging from 30.5 m to 152.4 m.
