Basavakalyana, the royal capital of the Western Chalukya (Kalyani Chalukya) dynasty from 1050 to 1195, has its fort. Somesvara I (1041-1068) made Basavakalyana his capital to separate the Kalyani Chalukyas from the Badami Chalukyas.
Integral to the town of Basavakalyana, this fort is famous as the karmabhumi of Basavanna (the founder of the Lingayat community) and hundreds of other Saranas (saints of the Lingayat community).
With its fort it was the center of a great social and religious movement due to the social reformer Basaveshwara. It became a place of learning. Especially Basaveshwara fought against the caste system and orthodoxy in Hinduism.
